In the fifties, it was not illegal to shoot off fireworks in the city. We always had sparklers and firecrackers. Of course the sparklers were saved to light after it was dark when they would show up better. The firecrackers, we got to shoot off during the day. Actually we shot them off for a few days. I paricularly liked lighting a bunch of them together for greater effect. lol My favorite thing to do with them though was to light one and then put a can over the top of it. When the cracker popped the can flew up real high. The bigger the firecracker the higher the can would fly!! We did this out in the street.
We usually had a barbecue in our backyard or a picnic in a park and always had ice cold watermelon. At night we would all go somewhere to watch the big fireworks display. We would sit up on top of the car to watch them--dad didn't care if we did that. We always had a great time.

Interesting since your son is very adament against firecrackers. I always had sparklers growing up. We would wrap them together into shapes.
ReplyDeleteSounds pretty!!
ReplyDeleteThey are illegal here in Spokane but legal in Montana. They kind of scare me though, so we just do sparklers, then watch the big fireworks display downtown. That's quite enough excitement for me! lol You didn't mention any ER trips though...
ReplyDeleteNone of us ever got hurt. You don't know what you're missing by not putting a large lit firecracker under a can! It was awesome!! lol
ReplyDeleteI think my firecracker fear is tied to my electricity fear......courtesy of a lamp I made in shop class. I do have some fireworks memories as a kid though:
ReplyDelete- Doing fireworks and sparklers at Grandma and Grandpa's house. I also remembering doing sparklers in San Francisco with the Smith's.
- Didn't we see them at the beach one time in California?
- Biggest one was the ones where we lived in Germany, when Dad convinced Laura they were just for her.
Your fear of fireworks went way back before the shop made lamp.
ReplyDeleteYou shot off bottle rockets with Darren at Grandma and Grandpa's
We took you to see fireworks at the beach when you were three or four. You were scared and backed yourself up by saying it must me dangerous or the fire department would not have to be there.
Laura thought the carnival and fireworks were set up in Mannheim Germany by her dad for her sixth birhtday.
When you were five we set off fireworks at the lake in North Dakota. You were so afraid of them that youu stayed in the cabin.
I feel like a big wuss. lol
ReplyDeleteI do remember those fireworks in Germany, and yes, I totally believed they were for me and my birthday. What I couldn't figure out though, if it was all for me, why didn't anyone know my name? No one knew I was the VIP. lol
